Superfoods are mostly plant based foods (ie blueberries, goji berries, acai berries, mushrooms, broccoli, kale) that have a very high nutritional value, they feed your body with essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to help you thrive. Superfoods are also found in a powdered supplement form you can add to smoothies or sprinkle on your food.
Adaptogens help the body to cope with stress and strengthen the immune system. These plant extracts are known to reduce stress and anxiety helping you feel calmer and relaxed. Some key adaptogens to get to know are Rholdiola, ashwagandha, ginseng and maca.
Adaptogens help the body’s internal systems build resilience for long-term wellness rather than providing a quick fix. For example, you might react to feelings of tiredness or fatigue by reaching for sugar, coffee or other stimulants. While these might help in the short term, they may actually deplete your energy over time. On the other hand, Rhodiola and ginseng can help slowly build up your body’s ability to ward off fatigue.
They are not a quick fix for anxiety or fatigue. Rather, they work by helping your body build resilience over time.
Adaptogens can help return your body back to a state of balance (homeostasis). The herbal action in adaptogens either increases or decreases chemical reactions within your body.
For example, if you’re stressed (which elevates cortisol), an adaptogen will respond by reducing cortisol levels. If you experience chronic fatigue with low cortisol levels, an adaptogen will increase the level of cortisol in your body.
*Please note - we advice doing your own research on any adaptogens you are thinking of taking or better still consult with a qualified health practitioner especially if you are taking any prescription medication.
